Max Dean Chair released

Max Dean and Raffaello D'Andrea have always been fun and interesting to keep up with. At the venice biennale they had one of my favorite works which was a table that forms relationships. More on that HERE but for now they have released their final version of the self assembling chair. Originally worked on for the past few years and slated to be completed in may of 2007 (a bit late but we forgive them) is now done. While at the University of Georgia I took a autonomous robotics class and thought this guy was amazing, my fellow classmates (not one of which was an artist) did not understand or agree. What a bunch of crazies.
Some other great robotic videos are linked below.

Encouraging Adults to Play in the Rain

This unique, funnel shaped umbrella harnesses the flow of rainwater down into its handle, a water pistol. The user can fire at will, maintaining a constant flow of water as long as rain continues to fall! (so brilliant it is also posted on 3d Design)

So yeah thats technically amazing

Northern California-based artist Bruce Shapiro makes the kind of kinetic sculpture that mesmerizes and dazzles visitors at science museums using computers and simple motors, a practice he terms "The Art of Motion Control." In episode 94 we visit Bruce at the Maker Fair and at his home to learn more about works like "Pipedream," effectively a screen that uses bubbles in place of pixels, "Sisyphus, "an intricate zen sand drawing and a kinetic ribbon sculpture modeled on ribbon dancers.

I would totally live here

Hair work Video

Lace ties

Check out some of the 33 ways to lace up your kicks HERE

Unreal

alison mealey creates beautiful images through computer games. all her work is
created from data captured by playing the computer game 'unreal tournament'.

each image represents about 30 mins of gameplay in which the computers ai plays
against itself, there are 20-25 bots playing each game. the bots play custom maps
I create. each map has been pathed so that the bots have a rough idea of where to
go in order to create the image I want. every image represents 1 full game, and the
position of the dots or lines reflects the position of a player at a given time.

Walton Ford

works by artist walton ford will be on display later this month at the san antonio museum of art. the exhibition,
entitled 'tigers of wrath', will display twenty-six of ford's large-scale water colour paintings. ford's art is characterized
by its resemblance to 19th-century natural-science illustrations. however a closer look reveals strange, often
subversive political imagery.

ford’s meticulous paintings satirize the history of colonialism and the continuing impact of slavery and other forms
of political oppression on today’s social and environmental landscape.

Hair Drawings

Exhibition of hair drawings and video installation opens at Platform, a new project space by Denise Bibro
The drawings are created with human hair collected from friends and family and carefully manipulated and applied to paper with archival tape and stickers. Each piece measures roughly 20 x 20." See all the rest HERE

Nice Jacket

The Smoking Jacket, by Fiona Carswell, has a built-in pair of lungs on the front that act as an iconographic “warning system”. The polite smoker can blow the smoke into a “container” at the collar, in order to avoid blowing it in the faces of people around them. The smoke then filters into a set of see-through lungs at the front of the jacket. Over time the lungs, which have an air-filter back, should darken from cigarette smoke… read more on we make money not art

This breaks my heart

Good design has alot to do with ease and simplifing life or in the least making it more enjoyable. Michal (not mispelled her name is spelled like that) is a designer that has made items for children of divorced parents.

This one is called "one key for two" It is sad that this has to happen to so many kids but at least someone is addressing it in the design world.

This fish bowl is made so you can carry your pet from one parents home to another.
This broke my heart.

Now we just need a nintendo controller

This is just fantastic.
This is the Cassette Tape MP3 Player and while some people might just chuckle a little and appreciate its nostalgic shape it actually doubles as a cassette tape, meaning besides plugging your earphones in it and use it as a portable MP3 player you can load it with music (via USB, which also charges it) and use it in any ‘ol cassette tape player. CORN

OXO approached TODA with the task of designing and engineering a simple, handheld device intended to assist in the removal of corn kernels from the cob of cooked corn. The objective was to deliver a comfortable, safe and functional product that would meet the product performance requirements. This was accomplished with a development process involving product and consumer research, concept brainstorming, and refinement with a focus on ergonomics, form and function.

1900s wooden watch

Seeing as the recent post about a wooden calculator proved so popular, here’s a look at another carpentry creation: a pocket watch made from wood. Excellent timepiece blog The Watchismo times found this Russian creation, dating back to around the turn of the century (no, not the one just gone). Some sources claim that the watch is entirely made out of wood, but I doubt it - the power source in pocketwatches is a tightly coiled metal spring, and I just can’t see wood living up to that task. Still, a marvellous creation!

Wooden Calculator

The strange and beautiful machine shown above is a reconstruction of a mechanical calculator built by mathematician and inventor Thomas Fowler in the 1830s. The orignal machine has long since been lost, and precious few clues to its design and construction exist. Painstaking research by Pamela Vass and David Hogan eventually pieced together enough information to allow them to start building their own machine, aided by Mark Glusker. Together this team were able to construct the first working model of Fowler’s ternary calculating machine in over 150 years.

Glitter

So my intention of this blog was for mainly visual things rather than stories of my days events and what nots (i tell enough of that stuff in person) but I have to share this one.

So I have this thing with glitter, actually its the other way around , glitter has a thing for me. I hate glitter. Minus the spectacular use of it by Claire Joyce (an artist friend of mine who uses glitter). Glitter never goes away for some reason it really stays on my skin if it gets on my hands I have to either tweezer each fleck off or what I end up doing is sanding my hands to get it off. So one of my students (Laura Medley) sent me a quote that is so so true. Just thought I would share.

"If you get glitter on you, be prepared to have it on you for the rest of your life...because glitter is the herpes of craft supplies. " - Demetri Martin
